Welcome.

La Fontaine is a lovely house in the country, but with all the amenities of the beautiful and historic town of Monpazier just a short walk away.

The house has been extensively remodelled to a very high standard over the last few years, to provide a spacious and comfortable home with every amenity for 10 to 12 people. Now that all the hard work has been completed we are offering our home from home for holiday rental. We hope you will like what you see and decide that you would like to visit.

Briefly, La Fontaine stands in grounds of about an acre, with an adjacent four and a half acre field. The house has five bedrooms, four doubles and a twin. Three have en-suite bath or shower rooms in addition to which there is a beautifully equipped family bathroom. There is a bed settee in the mezzanine floor of the pigeonnier which provides additional sleeping facilities, ideally for two children. There is a WC in every bath/shower room plus two others (water for the WC's comes from our own pond). In the lounge one of the three settees also converts into a double bed, ideal for accommodating unexpected guests.

With baggage allowances getting smaller we have tried to provide for your every need, such as supplying towels for pool use and putting hair-dryers in every bathroom, so that you can reduce the amount of luggage you need to carry. See Useful Information for more details.

The choice of La Fontaine for our home in France was dictated not just by the obvious attractions of the house and the beautiful surrounding countryside, but also by its location. There are many lovely houses in the Dordogne but all too often they are miles from anywhere, we know, we looked at a lot of them before finally discovering La Fontaine .

La Fontaine is perfectly situated. It is a house in the country, but with all the amenities of the beautiful town of Monpazier only 400 metres away. Among other amenities Monpazier has restaurants, bars, supermarkets, butchers, bakers, banks, a pharmacy, a hairdresser, a newsagent and stationer, a petrol station, a post-office and more, all a short walk from the house. But, other than Bastille Day, when the town puts on a splendid firework display, you wouldn't normally be aware that it was there. All of which means you don't have to drive miles for your supplies and you can enjoy an evening out in Monpazier without having to worry about driving back.

The house, which is south-facing, has a superb view of Monpazier to the east, and commanding views over the valley of the river Dropt and the rolling hills beyond, to the south.

La Fontaine started life several hundred years ago as a Pigeonnier. Pigeonniers are very typical of the Dordogne and were, as the name suggests, originally designed for keeping pigeons, which were highly valued in times past. Subsequently a house was built onto it which we have renovated and extended to provide extremely comfortable accommodation for ten to twelve people.

One of our guests, when ask to rate La Fontaine on a scale of 1 to 10, gave us a score of 15! While another said that for the first time ever they really didn't want their holiday to end.
